The love songs of the 90s came in all forms including rock, grunge, heavy and alternative metal. Hip-hop and R&B were also very popular and produced numerous love songs in the 90s as well.

Listed below are the top love singles from the 90s, in alphabetical order by title. For your convenience, we have compiled the songs in a playlist, making it easy for you to listen to a sample or purchase a song. A detailed listing is provided below the playlist.

All My Tears

“All My Tears” is sung by both Julie Miller and Emmylou Harris. While the Harris version is nice, Miller seems to capture the song a little bit better and it is her version that is linked below. The song is a Christian song about how things are better now that she is in heaven.

Significant Verse:

It don’t matter where you bury me
I’ll be home and I’ll be free
It don’t matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away

*************************

Angel

This song is slightly depressing with lyrics like “there’s always one reason / to feel not good enough,” “there’s vultures and thieves at your back” and “you keep on building the lie / that you make up for all that you lack.” Still, it is hauntingly beautiful in a style perfected by Sarah McLachlan.

Chorus:

In the arms of an angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You’re in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort there

*************************

Angels

This song has a Celtic feel to it and borders on being folksy, but not too bad. I would consider it a good alternative to Danny Boy. It should not be confused with the song Angels that is sung by Robbie Williams or the song Angel sung by Sarah McLachlan. The song is written and performed by Mary McLaughlin, who wrote the song for her brother, Anthony.

Chorus:

For angels must walk before they can fly
And angels must learn to laugh and to cry
The angels are here, they’re among you and I
We’re all learning to be angels

*************************

Another Soldier’s Coming Home

This song tells the story of a faithul Christian who fought many spiritual battles on Earth such as temptation, fear, and depression. Through it all, his/her faith never wavered. Now that Christian “soldier” as died and he/she is going home to Heaven. The song has a slower tempo and is very beautifully sung by Janet Paschal.

Chorus:

Strike up the band
Assemble the choir
Another soldier’s coming home
For he’ll battle no more

*************************

Back in His Arms Again

Mark Schultz sings this song. The song us upbeat with a fairly lively tempo. It’s focus is mainly on people who have turned away from religion. The song tells them that God has never abandoned them and is waiting for them to return home. It would also be appropriate for a funeral–especially for someone who had become a born-again Christian.

Significant Verse:

I believe that He never let you go
I believe that He’s wanting you to know
I believe that He’ll lead you ’til
You’re back in His arms again

*************************

Even the Darkness is Light to Him

This Christian lullaby is based on Psalm 139:11 and sung by Michael Card. It sounds more like a folk song than a traditional lullaby. The song talks about protection through the night.

Significant Lyrics:

The Father above does not slumber or sleep
He wakefully watches our ways
Then there’s no reason for you to weep
For the Father above neither slumbers nor sleeps

*************************

Friends

“Friends” is probably the sweetest, most meaningful song that could possibly be performed at a funeral. Although there are quite a few songs that have the same title, the version I am referring to is sung by Michael W. Smith, who also helped write the song. Like all of Smith’s songs, it has a strong religious feel to it and includes several references to God.

Chorus:

And friends are friends forever
If the lord’s the lord of them
And a friend will not say never
Cause the welcome will not end
Though its hard to let you go
In the father’s hands we know
That a lifetime’s not too long to live as friends.

*************************

Go Rest High On That Mountain

Vince Gill began writing this song after the death of Keith Whitley, but didn’t finish it until a few years later after the death of his brother. The song became a tribute to them both. The song is directed at the person who is passed on, and urges them to move on because they’ve earn the rest.

Significant Verse:

Oh, how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing

*************************

Heaven (Waiting There for Me)

Hayley Westenra is a teenage singer from New Zealand. She is definately a soprano and her talents will amaze you. She is the perfect singer for this song, which is about someone who has died too soon. The song makes some brief references to heaven, but no overt religious references. The best line in the song: “And oh, I know just by knowing you I was blessed / Yes, I was truly blessed.”

Significant Verse:

So why, tell me why the good die young my old friend
I pray that heaven waits for everyone in the end
And love, love is how we cross that bridge to the light
A star that is what you are in my darkest night
Be always by my side

*************************

Heaven Was Needing a Hero

Although Jo Dee Messina is known for being a country singer, this song does not have the traditional twang associated with country music. In other words, even people who typically dislike country music should like this song, especially after listening to the lyrics. One of the best lines in the song is “If I knew the last time that I held you was the last time / I’d have held you and never let go.”

Chorus:

I guess heaven was needing a hero
Somebody just like you
Brave enough to stand up
For what you believe
And follow it through
When I try to make it make sense in my mind
The only conclusion I come to
Is heaven was needing a hero
Like you

*************************

I Can Only Imagine

Written by the lead singer of MercyMe, a contemporary Christian group, this song talks about what it might be like to me Jesus the first time. The song was their first single and reached number one on the Christian charts. Amy Grant slightly rewrote the song and recorded it under the title “Imagine.”

Chorus:

Surrounded by Your glory, what will my heart feel
Will I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still
Will I stand in your presence or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah, will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine

*************************

Let it Be

“Let it Be” was written by Paul McCartney and part of the last album the Beatles released before breaking up. The phrase “mother Mary” is often misinterpreted to mean Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ. However, McCartney is actually referring to his own mother, who was also named Mary, who died when he was only 14. This song was played at Linda McCartney’s funeral.

Significant Verse:

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

*************************

One Sweet Day

“One Sweet Day” is sung by Boyz II Men and Mariah Carey. It is one of the most passionate and meaningful songs I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately, they sing the song so well that I doubt any other singer could do it justice. The religious mentions are very brief, but still important.

Refrain:

And I know you’re shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we’ve lost along the way
And I know eventually we’ll be together
One sweet day
Eventually we’ll sing in heaven

*************************

Tears in Heaven

Eric Clapton wrote this about his 4-year-old son Conor, who died when he fell out of a 53rd floor window in the apartment where his mother was staying in New York City. Clapton then recorded it as part of a movie soundtrack. It is a very soulful song that clearly illustrates how Clapton feels. However, it is generic enough to be appropriate at any type of funeral.

Significant Lyrics:

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven

*************************

When All is Said and Done

Geoff Moore sings this song about what will happen after death. The song wonders what people will think of him after he has gone as well as what he will face in the afterlife. It is a Christian song, with a good portion of the lyrics being devoted to talk of Jesus Christ and God.

Significant Verse:

When the music fades into the past,
When the days of life are through,
What will be remembered of where I’ve come?
When all is said and done?

*************************

You’re Gone

Paul Williams wrote “You’re Gone” with Nashville songwriter Jon Vezner. According to Williams, the song is based on his own life events. The message of the song basically states that the singer is glad for the moments that were shared, even though that person is gone. According to Williams, Garth Brooks recorded but never released a version of the song. To date, the most popular version of the song is Diamond Rio’s.

Significant Lyrics:

Now I know God has His reasons
But sometimes it’s hard to see them
When I awake and find that you’re not there
You found hope in hopeless
Your made crazy sane
You became the missing link
That helped me break my chains

*************************

The wedding first dance is a moment that should reflect how two individuals are coming together as one. Most bridal couples do this through their choice of song. Almost every romantic love ballad in existence has been used at some point for the wedding first dance, but through it all there are some songs that remain first dance favorites.

Or at least they did until a certain wedding video appeared on Good Morning America. Starting out with a traditional first dance song that suddenly gets interrupted for a much faster song (and dance routine) has now been all the rage – at least on Youtube! Since it is impossible to go over all the possible types of wedding dances you can do, we are going to stick with the more traditional first dance songs.

If you and your fiancée already have a special song, then your choice has most likely already been made. If you do not, then it’s time to start listening to some songs. The song you choose for your wedding first dance should reflect your personality as a couple. Keep in mind that this is the song that will always remind you of your wedding day, as well as one that you will most likely play on your anniversary and other special days.

When considering the song for your first dance, you’ll want to select something that means something to you as a couple. Was there a song playing the first time you met? What song was playing the first time you danced? Was there a song playing when he proposed? Was there a song playing the first time you kissed? What about the first time you said “I love you”? What was the theme song for the first movie you watched together? What about a special song from a concert you attended together? Is there a song that always makes you think of each other? If you’ve answered all these questions and have still not come up with anything, then you’ll be glad to see that we have an extensive list of first dance songs!

Don’t let your first dance be your last dance with your bride or groom during the wedding. Select a few of your favorite songs and make a promise with your fiancée that you will meet on the dance floor whenever they are played. It will give the two of you a chance to connect and make the reception even more special.

Listed below are some of the best wedding first dance songs. For your convenience, we have compiled the songs in a playlist, making it easy for you to listen to a sample or purchase a song. A detailed listing of the songs is provided below the playlist.

Girls in felt poodle skirts with pony tails and guys in blue suede loafers with greased back hair – what decade other than the 50′s? This musical era ushered in the birth and boom of a new kind of music known as rock and roll. The future King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley, emerged onto the music scene from Memphis Tennessee and he, along with Bill Haley and Jerry Lee Lewis, were big drivers of the new rock and roll sound. The origin of rock and roll came from a mix of southern blues and gospel and the new sound soared in popularity with the first baby boomers, who were just beginning to hit their teenage years. Other prominent rock and roll musicians of the decade included Bo Diddley, Little Richard and Buddy Holly. Sadly, Buddy Holly (along with Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson) died tragically in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. This event was commemorated 12 years later by Don McLean who described the accident in his hit song, American Pie, as “the day the music died.”

The 50′s also brought in the beginning of “personal” music listening. The very first transistor radio hit the consumer market and became an immediate commercial success – the Regency TR-1. This battery powered radio was small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and allowed listeners for the first time to have truly portable music. Up to this point, there was generally one large radio in the house (typically in the den) and pretty much the whole family sat around and listened to it. Now, with the TR-1, people could listen to the radio just about anywhere they wanted… with or without the family. Offered initially in black, ivory, mandarin red and cloud gray, Regency soon began making the TR-1′s available in other colors as well. With their beautiful brass dials and trendy colors, the radios almost became fashion accessories – a true precurser to modern day personal electronic devices!

Top Movie Songs of the 90′s

The 90′s brought in an era of blockbuster special effects, but did little as far changing the current music trend. Disney managed to land back in the top ten with some of its movies beginning with The Little Mermaid, and then Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King. Although their films always featured spectacular music, they began a new trend of having popular artists sing one of the main songs of the film and releasing it as a single. This became lucrative for Disney as well as Christina Aguilera–she got her second big break singing “Reflections” on the Mulan CD (her first break came from being on The Mickey Mouse Show).[1]

Listed below are what we consider to be the best songs from movies of the 1990′s.

32 Best Movie Songs From the 80′s

When viewing the world of movie music, the 80′s would be the decade of soundtracks. No decade has produced as many popular soundtracks as the 80′s did. Where would the 80′s be without these legendary soundtracks: Flashdance, Footloose, Top Gun, Vision Quest, When Harry Met Sally…, Dirty Dancing, and Batman.

One justification for this would have to be the newest craze of MTV. Suddenly, film makers had a new way to advertise their upcoming film: a music video. But this impact was not simply a one-way street. MTV also had an impact on the movies as well. Many movies from the 80′s began using music in the films as sort of “self-contained music videos.” The actors do not sing the songs, but instead are dancing to the music. A couple of good examples of this are “Maniac” from Flashdance, ”I’m Free” from Footloose, ”Old Time Rock And Roll” from Risky Business, and “Take my Breath Away” from Top Gun.

We’ve selected some of the best songs from these soundtracks and have listed them here. Listed below are the songs we consider to be among the best from movies of the 1980′s.

Top 18 Movie Songs of the 70′s

Some of the biggest blockbusters ever to hit the movie screens were made in the 1970′s. While these thrilled us, they did very little to increase our music playlists. However, they did create a new trend that continues in Hollywood today–the epic film score.

Where would Darth Vader be without his Imperial March? Or Superman without his theme song? Did you know that one of the most legendary film scores was created because of a mechanical problem? Steven Spielburg, relatively new in the movie industry, couldn’t get his mechanical sharks to work in the salt water. They kept breaking down and slowing down production. Running out of time, Spielburg decided to use music to enhance the drama and film “around” the shark. What could’ve been a disaster ended up being movie gold – and it’s always fun to take that soundtrack to the beach!

Below are what we consider among the best songs from movies of the 1970s:

The 1960′s were an interesting time in America and on the movie screen. A few trends continued from previous decade, such as Elvis, who sang and danced across the screen in G.I. Blues (1960), Flaming Star (1960), Blue Hawaii (1961) and Kid Galahad (1962) to name a few.

But the 60′s also produced some of the best musicals. Even movies that were not musically theme managed to land music (not featured in the movie) on the music charts. Four of the top ten grossing movies were musicals: 101 Dalmatians (1961), The Jungle Book (1967), The Sound of Music (1965), and Mary Poppins (1964). While many of the others had top ten hits from their soundtracks, such as “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon & Garfunkel from The Graduate (1967) and “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” by B.J. Thomas from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). James Bond also made his way on to the major screen and Billboard Hit lists with “Goldfinger” by Shirley Bassey, “Thunderball” by Tom Jones, and “You Only Live Twice” by Nancy Sinatra.

Listed below are what we consider to be the best movie songs of the 1960′s:

Top 52 Movie Songs of the 1950′s

The term soundtrack originated in the 1950s, when film studios decided to release albums as a promotional gimmick for upcoming movies. They then labeled these recordings as “music from the original motion picture soundtrack.” This is not too suprising onsidering that one of the biggest icons in Rock n Roll was dancing his way across the screen at this time. I’m, of course, talking about Elvis Presley. Elvis appeared in two movies during the 1950s Love Me Tender(1956) (originally titled The Reno Brothers), and Jailhouse Rock (1957). Both movies had title singles connected with them that eventually hit #1 on the music charts.

Television was beginning to creep up in popularity and many people speculated it would be the end of the movies (so much so that film studios banned its stars from appearing on television until 1956). Instead, it proved to be a new venue for the movies. The very first film broadcast on television occurred in November 3, 1956. It, of course, was a musical–the legndary Wizard of Oz.

Below are what we consider to be the top movie songs of the 1950′s. Please note, most but not all of the songs are available for preview in the playlist box.
