Girls in felt poodle skirts with pony tails and guys in blue suede loafers with greased back hair – what decade other than the 50′s? This musical era ushered in the birth and boom of a new kind of music known as rock and roll. The future King of Rock and Roll himself, Elvis Presley, emerged onto the music scene from Memphis Tennessee and he, along with Bill Haley and Jerry Lee Lewis, were big drivers of the new rock and roll sound. The origin of rock and roll came from a mix of southern blues and gospel and the new sound soared in popularity with the first baby boomers, who were just beginning to hit their teenage years. Other prominent rock and roll musicians of the decade included Bo Diddley, Little Richard and Buddy Holly. Sadly, Buddy Holly (along with Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson) died tragically in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. This event was commemorated 12 years later by Don McLean who described the accident in his hit song, American Pie, as “the day the music died.”

The 50′s also brought in the beginning of “personal” music listening. The very first transistor radio hit the consumer market and became an immediate commercial success – the Regency TR-1. This battery powered radio was small enough to fit in a shirt pocket and allowed listeners for the first time to have truly portable music. Up to this point, there was generally one large radio in the house (typically in the den) and pretty much the whole family sat around and listened to it. Now, with the TR-1, people could listen to the radio just about anywhere they wanted… with or without the family. Offered initially in black, ivory, mandarin red and cloud gray, Regency soon began making the TR-1′s available in other colors as well. With their beautiful brass dials and trendy colors, the radios almost became fashion accessories – a true precurser to modern day personal electronic devices!

When viewing the world of movie music, the 80′s would be the decade of soundtracks. No decade has produced as many popular soundtracks as the 80′s did. Where would the 80′s be without these legendary soundtracks: Flashdance, Footloose, Top Gun, Vision Quest, When Harry Met Sally…, Dirty Dancing, and Batman.

One justification for this would have to be the newest craze of MTV. Suddenly, film makers had a new way to advertise their upcoming film: a music video. But this impact was not simply a one-way street. MTV also had an impact on the movies as well. Many movies from the 80′s began using music in the films as sort of “self-contained music videos.” The actors do not sing the songs, but instead are dancing to the music. Some of the biggest blockbusters ever to hit the movie screens were made in the 1970′s. While these thrilled us, they did very little to increase our music playlists. However, they did create a new trend that continues in Hollywood today–the epic film score.

Where would Darth Vader be without his Imperial March? Or Superman without his theme song? Did you know that one of the most legendary film scores was created because of a mechanical problem? The 1960′s were an interesting time in America and on the movie screen. A few trends continued from previous decade, such as Elvis, who sang and danced across the screen in G.I. Blues (1960), Flaming Star (1960), Blue Hawaii (1961) and Kid Galahad (1962) to name a few.

But the 60′s also produced some of the best musicals. Even movies that were not musically theme managed to land music (not featured in the movie) on the music charts. Four of the top ten grossing movies were musicals: 101 Dalmatians (1961), The Jungle Book (1967), The Sound of Music (1965), and Mary Poppins (1964). Top 52 Movie Songs of the 1950′s

The term soundtrack originated in the 1950s, when film studios decided to release albums as a promotional gimmick for upcoming movies. They then labeled these recordings as “music from the original motion picture soundtrack.” This is not too suprising onsidering that one of the biggest icons in Rock n Roll was dancing his way across the screen at this time. I’m, of course, talking about Elvis Presley. Elvis appeared in two movies during the 1950s Love Me Tender(1956) (originally titled The Reno Brothers), and Jailhouse Rock (1957). Both movies had title singles connected with them that eventually hit #1 on the music charts.

Television was beginning to creep up in popularity and many people speculated it would be the end of the movies (so much so that film studios banned its stars from appearing on television until 1956). Instead, it proved to be a new venue for the movies. The very first film broadcast on television occurred in November 3, 1956. It, of course, was a musical–the legndary Wizard of Oz.
